Failure to Yield to Pedestrians

In this latest pedestrian accident in Georgia, a UGA student suffered minor injuries after being struck by a vehicle on East Campus, while crossing the Joseph E. Brown crosswalk. “There were two lanes of traffic headed northbound,” said University of Georgia police chief Jimmy Williamson. “The car to the inside lane had yielded to the pedestrian. As the pedestrian was visible to the outer lane, the car in the outer lane did not yield and struck the pedestrian.” The victim of the crosswalk accident was transported to a local hospital for treatment, and the driver involved in the incident was cited for failure to yield to a pedestrian.

Pedestrian Accidents in Georgia

Pedestrian and crosswalk accidents have become a growing problem on the University of Georgia campus, and more and more UGA students are suffering injuries in pedestrian accidents, most of which take place in the Joseph E. Brown crosswalk spanning Baldwin Street. On August 18, a male student crossing Baldwin Street was struck in the crosswalk by a black car, and the impact threw the student to the ground and broke one of the vehicle’s windows. Another male student was struck just two days later in the same crosswalk after exiting a bus, and suffered cuts, bruises and what appeared to be a leg injury in the accident.

Motor vehicles are expected to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, but too often, drivers are distracted behind the wheel, putting the lives of others at risk. “Have your full attention to your mode of transportation,” Williamson said following one of the first pedestrian accidents on Baldwin Street this semester. “Don’t text, don’t be looking at electronic devices. Don’t be distracted and use extreme caution on campus.” If you have been injured in a pedestrian accident in Atlanta, Marietta, or elsewhere in Georgia, consult our reputable lawyers at Rechtman & Spevak to discuss your legal options.
