Fourteen people were killed on Georgia roadways during Labor Day weekend this year, including a 52-year-old Cochran man who died after losing control of his motorcycle and hitting a guy wire in Bleckley County. The 14 traffic accident deaths took place during Georgia State Patrol’s holiday period, which ran from 6 pm Friday until midnight Monday, and the number of fatalities during the holiday weekend represents one more than the 13 people killed during the same 78-hour period last year. Labor Day Accidents, Fatalities in Georgia

Four of this year’s Labor Day weekend deaths took place in Metro Atlanta, while two occurred in Roswell, one in Cobb Country and another in DeKalb County. Fatalities were investigated by Georgia State Patrol posts in Blue Ridge, Cartersville, Athens, Manchester, Dublin, Madison, Tifton, Waycross and Albany. Overall, there were 443 accidents that injured 226 people during Labor Day weekend this year, reports the Georgia Department of Public Safety, although some believe efforts by the state patrol to increase visibility during busy holiday travel weekends have paid off. “We’ve had Labor Day weekend fatalities as high as 22,” said Georgia Department of Public Safety spokesperson Gordy Wright. In addition to the 443 Georgia motor vehicle accidents, state troopers also arrested more than 225 drivers on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol.

The alarming statistics regarding Labor Day accident deaths throughout Georgia shed light on the importance of paying attention behind the wheel, especially during busy travel holidays like Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Far too often, avoidable collisions and fatalities on Georgia roadways result from driver inattention, distracted driving or drunk driving, particularly when there are more vehicles on the road than usual. According to national statistics, from 1998 to 2008, an average of 503 people were killed every year during Labor Day weekend, with 40% of the fatalities due to drunk drivers.
