Bicycle Rider Struck by Passenger Car
According to authorities, 61-year-old Walter Leggett was riding his bicycle on U.S. 41, and attempted to turn left onto Heritage Drive, when he was struck by a Lincoln Town Car driven by 78-year-old Ahmad Rasheed. The tragic bicycle accident took place in the afternoon on October 27, and Monroe County Coroner Joey Proctor reported that Leggett, who lived in Monroe County, died shortly after 8 p.m. at the Medical Center of Central Georgia, about four hours after the wreck occurred. Prior to his death, Leggett had practiced law for more than 30 years, and specialized in estate planning, probate and elder law. He had recently started his own practice, opening an office on Vineville Avenue in Monroe.
Bicycle Accident Injuries, Fatalities
Much like motorcycle riders, bicyclists are at an increased risk of being involved in a serious accident on Georgia roadways because of their small profile. Drivers who become distracted behind the wheel or who fail to properly check their mirrors before making a turn or changing lanes put the safety of cyclists at risk on a daily basis. Unfortunately, in a collision involving a bicycle and motor vehicle, the cyclist is far more likely to suffer life-threatening or even fatal injuries. In 2002, 662 cyclists were killed in bicycle accidents throughout the United States, and another 48,000 were injured. During that same year, bicycle riders accounted for 12% of all non-motorist traffic deaths, according to the National Center of Statistics and Analysis.
