Child in Serious Condition Following Bike Wreck
The GA bike accident that injured six-year-old Jace Durham-Thomas took place at about 1:30 p.m. on Christmas Day, as the child was trying out his brand new bicycle near Wade Lake Trail in Ellenwood, Georgia. Jace’s family had just returned home after volunteering at Hosea Feed the Hungry at the Georgia World Congress Center, when the six-year-old decided to ride his bike around the neighborhood. Police say Jace was struck by someone driving a silver BMW 6 Series model, and that the driver left the scene of the accident without stopping or notifying police. Jace suffered numerous injuries in the cycling accident, including a broken jaw, broken femur, a sprained neck and head injuries.
Driver May Have Been Speeding at Time of Accident
According to Jace’s family, the six-year-old remains unconscious at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Egleston, and his grandmother says, “He’s not responding to squeeze my hands. He slightly opened his eyes though. But he’s not really responding like we think he should.” As Jace’s family prays for the boy’s full recovery, they are asking the driver involved in the tragic bicycle accident to surrender to DeKalb police. Lisa Walker, the woman who first called 911 after the bike accident, says “[The driver] had to be doing at least 60 (mph),” and neighbors say they often saw the same BMW 6 Series speeding through the subdivision.
