A worker fell to his death earlier this month in a construction accident on the campus of the new Chamblee Charter High School in Georgia, and the work-related fatality is currently under investigation by local police and the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The company in charge of constructing the new building, Turner Construction, claims it took every measure possible to protect the safety of its workers on the job site, but a lawsuit by the deceased worker’s loved ones is still likely. If you have suffered injuries in a construction site accident in Georgia, or if you lost a loved one to a fatal work injury, contact our knowledgeable lawyers at Rechtman & Spevak to explore your possible compensation options.
Scissor Lift Construction Accident Death
According to authorities, the Georgia worker, who has not yet been named, was inside the Chamblee Charter High School building on a scissor lift when he fell from the lift for unknown reasons. A scissor lift, also known as an aerial work platform, is a type of mechanical platform commonly used on construction sites to allow workers and equipment temporary access to otherwise inaccessible areas, usually at height. Because construction workers using scissor lifts are typically working several stories off the ground, any problem with the machinery causing it to malfunction or any issue with the worker’s safety equipment can have devastating consequences for the worker.
Investigation into Cause of Fatal Work Accident
Turner Construction confirmed the Georgia workplace fatality in a statement following the construction accident, which took place on May 7, and noted that the company is cooperating in full with official investigations, as well as launching a safety re-training and an investigation of its own. Authorities have noted that OSHA, Chamblee Police and Dekalb Schools Police are conducting their own investigations into the fatality at the GA construction site, in order to determine the cause of the tragic accident. Even though Turner Construction has a good safety record, the company could still be held liable for compensation to the worker’s family if employer negligence is found to have played a role in the tragedy.
