Three Students Involved in Wreck
Cedartown Police Chief James Newsome was the first to arrive on the scene of the fatal car accident, which took place at about 7:45 a.m. on September 2. According to Newsome, the driver of the vehicle in which Macedo was a passenger somehow lost control and crashed the car into a ditch on Collard Valley Road near Clyde Street. Macedo was ejected from the vehicle during the wreck, and was transported to Polk Medical Center, but did not survive her injuries. Both the driver and the other passenger in the car sustained non-life threatening injuries in the Georgia car accident, and were treated and released from the hospital, according to Newsome.
Victim Remembered as “a Dream Student”
“It’s a tragedy regardless of the size of the community,” said Newsome. “But it’s especially a tragedy in a community this size.” According to Principal Darrell Wetherington, Macedo was a popular girl at Cedartown High School and an excellent student, and “the teachers would light up when she walked into the classroom.” Wetherington and other administrators were reportedly outside the school early Tuesday morning and heard sirens headed to the site of the fatal car accident. When the police chief later confirmed that Kari Macedo had died in the wreck, the devastating news spread quickly to students and staff members, who remember the 17-year-old as “a dream student.”
