Workplace Safety on Construction Sites

The job site death in Georgia is an example of how easily deadly accidents can occur on construction sites, and how construction workers must remain vigilant about workplace safety even when they’re not working around power tools or heavy machinery. Due to the prevalence of construction site falls and other similar accidents on job sites across the United States, the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) dedicates a significant amount of attention to outlining safety standards regarding fall protection and the prevention of worker deaths on construction sites.

Construction Site Deaths in the U.S.

Despite efforts by federal regulators to curb the rate of construction accident deaths across the United States, the construction industry continues to see devastating worker injuries and tragic loss of life. According to OSHA, out of the 3,929 worker deaths in the private industry in 2013, 796 – or 20.3%, one in five – were in construction. Furthermore, the leading causes of worker fatalities on construction sites that year were falls, followed by struck by object, electrocution, and caught-in/between accidents. These four types of accidents are so frequently named as the cause of worker deaths on construction sites, that they are commonly referred to as the “Fatal Four” of construction accidents.
